history of hickory rock baptist church
Our story began in 1915 when several individuals met at the old Hickory Rock Academy to organize a Missionary Baptist Church in the Hickory Rock community. There it was decided to plant a church in Hickory Rock, and church services were held in the Hickory Rock Academy until a church building was completed in 1916. Rev. George Duke was called to be the first pastor of the Hickory Rock Baptist Church. The charter members of Hickory Rock Baptist Church were:
Mr. & Mrs. W. J. Dennis Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Joyner Mr. A. B. Inscoe Mr. & Mrs. J. R. Inscoe Mr. R. H. Bobbitt Mrs. Cora Bobbitt Mr. J. R. Joyner |
Mr. & Mrs. E. H. Gupton Mr. Asbury Dennis Mr. Frank Dennis Miss Mary Dennis Mr. Jake Dennis Mrs. O. B. Ball. |
The church building was dedicated in 1920. In that same year, Hickory Rock Baptist Church joined the Tar River Baptist Association. The building was renovated in 1935, and a new Sunday School wing was built. Between 1948 and 1969, several improvement projects were undertaken and completed. These projects included bricking the church, purchasing the pulpit and altar, the addition of the front porch, and the installation of stained glass windows in the sanctuary. In 1969 the church built a parsonage on land donated by Mrs. Lula Smith.
Since the church’s founding in 1915, the people of Hickory Rock Baptist Church have found ways to impact and minister to their community. The church has done this through donation drives, supporting area missions projects, such as Safe Space, and volunteering time, labor, and resources to those in need. The church has also partnered with the Tar River Baptist Association to support Baptist ministries in North Carolina, including the North Carolina Baptist Hospital and the North Carolina Children’s Homes. In 1999, a Hispanic Ministry was begun by the church to reach the local Hispanic Community. English classes were offered for individuals seeking to learn English, and worship services were held in Spanish for Spanish speakers. Hickory Rock also supports local and international missions projects by giving annually to the Annie Armstrong and Lottie Moon Offerings.
God has graciously blessed the efforts and labor of the people of Hickory Rock Baptist Church in the past. It is our desire to keep laboring diligently in His service into the future. We seek to be a community where all people are welcome and where all who come can grow in the love and teaching of Christ.
